Darlene Rustad, 93, of Oskaloosa, Iowa and formerly of Wallingford and Estherville,Iowa, died Saturday, August 14, 2021, at Northern Mahaska Specialty Care in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

She was born February 1, 1928, in Emmet County, Iowa, the daughter of Clarence and Maurine Wetterhaus Hanson. She graduated from Gruver, Iowa High School with the class of 1945. On February 25, 1949, she was united in marriage to Lowell Rustad at the Wallingford Lutheran Church. To this union five children were born, Ron, Leanne, Don, John, and Mike.

Darlene spent her days providing a loving caring home for her family. In addition to tending to her children and home she worked as a nurse’s aide (at night so she could be with her children during the day) at Good Samaritan Care Center in Estherville for many years. She also worked as a bookkeeper at the Napa Auto Parts Store in Estherville.

She was a member of the Wallingford Lutheran Church where she played the piano, sang duets with her sister, and volunteered for many years. She was very talented at counted cross stitch; and was proud of the fact that her projects were displayed in her home, and in the homes of her family. Darlene looked forward to entertaining friends and family for coffee time, so much so that the coffee pot was always on and there was always a treat for those that stopped. She also enjoyed card games, puzzles, and music.

Her family includes her five children, Ron (Elaine) Rustad of San Tan Valley, Arizona, Leanne (Myron) Linn of Adel,Iowa, Don Rustad of Estherville, John Rustad of Graettinger, Iowa, and Mike (Joy) Rustad of Oskaloosa; six grandchildren, Shawn, Stacia, Alexandra, Jacquelin, Jesse, and Amy; several great and great great grandchildren; her sister, Lenora Rustad of California; and many nieces and nephews.

Darlene was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband.

As was Darlene’s wish her body had been cremated. A memorial service was held Wednesday, August 18, 2021, at the Wallingford Lutheran Church in Wallingford, Iowa with Reverend John Wolf officiating. Burial of the urn was at the Wallingford Lutheran Cemetery.
