Steven Robert Hatland, the son of Jim and Virginia (Vollrath) Hatland was born July 15, 1991 in Estherville, Iowa. He decided to depart this life on Sunday, February 21, 2021 at his home in Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 29.

Steven received his education and graduated from Estherville High School in 2009. He attended Iowa Lakes Community College and then graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Constructional Engineering in 2014. After receiving his degree, he received his Iron Engineering Ring and he never took it off. This means, every year, graduating Engineering Students receive a ring to uphold the principles of professionalism and to perform their work to the best of their abilities and he especially took pride in it. He would tap it on the table with every project he worked on. Along with the ring, he wore a cross necklace that he has rarely taken off since his confirmation at age 14.

With his degree, Steven enjoyed living and working in Des Moines as a self-employed carpenter. He enjoyed being a handyman and working on different projects for neighboring friends. His favorite memory was at age 21, when he contributed in voluntary relief efforts building homes in Tennessee for the flood victims in 2013.

Steven loved sports and lived for Iowa State. The clothing he wore was typically nothing but ISU. He enjoyed watching the Minnesota Vikings, loved going to Iowa Cubs games, and attending festivals as well as concerts. He loved them all more when family and friends were able to join. With work and distance, scheduling get-togethers were often difficult but his time spent with family was very meaningful to him and he often found the smallest of reasons to see them, even with the offer of giving free airport parking, taxi and room to sleep. Many of the friends that he had were considered family to him, especially the regular patrons and employees of the Wicked Rabbit, Sud’s, and Sully’s in Des Moines. He loved us all.

Steven is survived by his parents, Jim and Virginia; sisters, Aradia Allen and Tonya Cole; brothers, James and Craig Hatland, along with nieces and nephews.

He has been preceded in death by his grandparents; and uncles, David and Duane Hatland and Tom Vollrath.

A funeral service was held Friday, February 26, 2021 at the Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Estherville with interment at Lincoln Township Cemetery, Dolliver, Iowa.
