Dale Kenneth Green 1925-2021

Dale Kenneth Green, son of Clare and Helen (Moe) Green, was born August 14, 1925 and departed this life on January 31, 2021 at the age of 95 in Dickinson County Hospital.

He grew up on a farm in Cherokee County. He attended a one-room grade school and then attended Quimby, Iowa and Cleghorn, Iowa High Schools, graduating from the Cleghorn High School in 1943. He served in the Army as a medical technician from September 1945-January 1947 in Korea and was a staff sergeant at his discharge.

Dale was united in marriage to Dorothy Anna Dawson on May 3, 1947 at Hawarden, Iowa. He attended Colorado University for one year, then transferred to Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, where he graduated in May of 1950.

He taught science in the Ireton, Iowa and Hawarden, Iowa schools for ten years and then completed his M.S. at the University of South Dakota in guidance and counseling. He started the counseling program in Hawarden and was a part of the Interest and Feasibility Studies for the Community College in Sheldon, Iowa.

The family moved to Estherville, Iowa in 1963 and he was a counselor at the high school until 1967. He was selected to teach education and psychology at the Estherville Junior College (now Iowa Lakes Community College) in 1968. He redesigned the Introduction to Education Program that models early experience and group learning techniques. He returned to counseling at the Estherville High School in 1975 and served as Director of Guidance and Counseling until his retirement in 1987.

As a sideline to his teaching, he did some farming and raised purebred Angus cattle. After retirement he built their family home at the age of 70 and became interested in buying and restoring older homes. He sold real estate for several years and purchased a number of rentals that he enjoyed fixing and remodeling.

He found pleasure in fishing, teaching and having coffee with his friends while they solved the world’s problems. He was a long-time member of the Presbyterian church where he served as an elder and deacon. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in both Hawarden and Estherville, the NEA, ISEA, AIGA, NCA and an active member of the Democratic Party.

Dale is survived by his daughter, Margaret Ann Green; his son, Dale Robert “Bob” Green and his wife Nancy Wilson Green, their daughter, Amy Green Fletcher and her husband, Jeremy and their sons Erick and Josh; their son Ben Green and his wife Marie and their daughter Annalies; his son-in-law, Kirk Waggie, father to Lisa Waggie Dammon and her husband, Bill, their children: Emma and James Dammon; Aaron Waggie and Gabe Schiefman and their children Noah and Ava. He is also survived by his daughter, Ruth Lynn Green who was married to Brian Moorberg; and their children: Matthew Moorberg, married to Amber Johnson Moorberg, their children Oliver and Leena; Colby Moorberg, married to Stacy Schacherer Moorberg, and their son, Bernhard; and Joe Moorberg, married to Katie Boechholt Moorberg, and their son, Preston. He is also survived by his sister, Beverly Green Nelson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Burl, Vernon, and Melvin; his sisters, Doris Roseen, and Vesta Cartright; his wife, Dorothy; and his daughter, Mary Jo Waggie.

A public visitation was held Saturday, February 6, 2021 at the Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Estherville. Interment at Oak Hill Cemetery, Estherville.
