Mrs. Maude [Maud] Dayton, 76, Dies Here
Mrs. Maude Irene Dayton, 76, lifetime resident of Estherville and one of the first telephone operators, died yesterday afternoon of a heart attack at the Elmer Rogers’ home, 208 N. 15th St. Mrs. Dayton had been making her home with the Rogers for approximately a year.Mrs. Dayton had previously suffered a number of heart attacks and had been hospitalized a number of times. She had been in poor health for the past year and a half.
The daughter of the late Richard and Mary [Crumb] Hudson, Mrs. Dayton was born March 26, 1878 in Estherville. She was united in marriage Oct. 15, 1902 to Charles A. Dayton, longtime local barber.
Surviving Mrs. Dayton’s death are a daughter, Mrs. Ruth M. Brawford, Estherville, and three grandchildren, Charles, John and Dorothy; two sisters, Mrs. Jessie Seevers, Estherville and Mrs. William McCaddem, Crescent City, Fla.; and three brothers, Harold A. Hudson, Kenmore, N.Y.; H.L. Hudson, Montana and H.F. Hudson, Tracey, Minn. Mr. Dayton died in 1934.
Funeral services have tentatively been scheduled for Thursday, 2 p.m. at the Methodist church, the Rev. Harrison G. Dawes officiating. Friends may call at Sternborg Funeral home from noon tomorrow until time of services. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, September 10, 1956)
