She died Monday, April 2, 2012, at the Good Samaritan Society in Estherville.

Irene P. Pickens, the adopted daughter of Glen C. and Estella (Bradshaw) Pickens, was born May 24, 1919, in Emmetsburg.

Irene moved with her parents in 1922 to Estherville where her father was employed by the railroad. She received her education in the Estherville schools and graduated from Estherville High School in 1936. After graduation from high school she attended Estherville Junior College.

On May 24, 1939, Irene was united in marriage to Lyle C. Lastine, in Pipestone, Minn. Following their marriage the couple lived on several farms, before making their home on a farm near Terril in 1954, where they raised their family and Lyle was engaged in farming. They had two children, Wesley and Cheryl. Irene was an active farm wife and prepared meals and lunches for the farmhands who assisted Lyle in his farming operation. Irene and Cheryl both attended Iowa Lakes Community College and both graduation May 24, 1974. Irene loved history and traveled extensively overseas. She would share her experiences with others, speaking at many civic organizations and local churches throughout the area, relating her travels to those in attendance. If Irene received any compensation for speaking, she would endorse the check and instruct them to use it for the food pantry in order to help less fortunate individuals. Her most meaningful trip was one to the Holy Land. The couple retired in 1988 and moved into Estherville.

Irene was a member of the Church of the Nazarene. She was also an accomplished organist/pianist and donated her time and talents for three years at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Spirit Lake.

Left to cherish Irene's memory are her son, Wesley Lastine, and his wife, Connie of Ames; grandchildren, Douglas Lastine and his wife, Beth, Jana Sobecks and her husband, Brian, Michaele Satterlund and her husband, Jason, and David Lastine, and several great-grandchildren.

Preceding Irene in death were her husband, Lyle, who died Aug. 26, 2007; daughter Cheryl who died Jan. 12, 2005, and her parents.
