Ward Greer Dies After Long Illness
Ward Alexander Greer, manager of the Gardston hotel for 11 years, died at 9:30 a.m. today at Holy Family hospital at the age of 58. He died of malignant hypertension.

Born March 17, 1895, in Cedar township, Sac county, he was the youngest son of Alexander and Hannah Greer. His father died when he was 14 years old and he lived with his mother on the farm until she died in 1922.

He was educated in the Sac county schools and took business courses by correspondence. In 1927 he began work for the Wilson Implement company in Lytton but always had been interested in hotels.

Two years later he was interviewed by E.A. Boss of the Boss hotels chain in Storm Lake. He began work as a night clerk at the Gardston hotel on July 1, 1929, and has been here since, nearly a quarter of a century.

He later became day clerk and on Jan. 1, 1943, became manager of the hotel. Two years ago he became ill and was treated for two weeks in Rochester. He returned to work until last May. He has been a patient in Holy Family hospital since May 21.

He married Lurene Wayt of Sac City on June 30, 1927, in Fremont, Neb.

Mr. Greer was a member of the Methodist church here, Masonic lodge in Sac City, Izaak Walton league and Chamber of Commerce.

Surviving his death are his wife; a daughter, Jane at home; two sisters, Mrs. Lena Maule of Lytton and Miss Lou Greer of Estherville; and a brother, O.H. Greer on the home place in Sac City.

Funeral services tentatively have been set for Monday and final arrangements will be announced in the Daily News tomorrow. Burial will be in Cedar cemetery in Sac county , where he helped to form a cemetery association. (Estherville Daily News, August 27, 1953)
