W.C. [William Clark] Ayers, Dead
The announcement Monday [April 8, 1901] morning of the death of W.C. Ayers was a great shock to the citizens of Estherville. Few knew of his serious illness. He had been confined to his home for a few days with a gathering in his head, but nothing serious was anticipated. Saturday morning he felt so much better that he ventured out of doors and in the afternoon came down town and transacted some business at his photograph gallery. He went to the barber shop and got shaved and it was while there that he began feeling worse. On coming out he complained of feeling dizzy, a carriage was sent for and he was carried to his home. Soon after arriving there he became unconscious and remained in that condition until death came at 3:30 Monday morning. He never uttered a word nor even a groan after becoming unconscious. He passed away very easily, seemingly without pain. Deceased had been a resident of Estherville the past fifteen years and had friends by the score, all of whom will mourn his sudden demise. He was forty years of age at the time of his death. Funeral services were held at two o’clock this afternoon, conducted by the Modern Woodmen lodge, of which he was a member, and the remains interred in the west side cemetery. A wife and three children are left to morn his untimely death. (Estherville Democrat, Estherville, IA, April 10, 1901)
