Charles Case
Belvedere, S.C. – Lt. Col. Charles Edward Case, born in Estherville, Sept. 4, 1906, died in Belvedere, S.C. on June 15, 1984. Ed Case, as he was known to friends in Estherville, attended school here and for over ten years was a member of the Estherville police force. He left his job as a policeman early in World War II and joined the U.S. Army. He attended Officer Candidate School, received a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant, and served at a prisoner-of-war camp in Nebraska, then in England, France, and Germany. He was discharged after the war and returned to Estherville. He rejoined the police force and was made Chief of Police. But he left Estherville again for the Army, had training at Carlyle Barracks, Pa., and was sent back to Germany where he served at the time of the Berlin Airlift. The army was then his career and after Germany Case served in Oklahoma, Georgia and Korea. He retired at Fort Gordan, Ga., with his wife, Lola B. (Hale) Case.In retirement Case did woodworking, a skill he started in Estherville. He and his wife also gardened and raised prize roses, and traveled. They bowled and Case won trophies when past his 70th birthday.
Case is survived by a sister who lives in Jackson, Minn., Maye Case, a sister in Estherville and a brother in Canon City, Colo.; a daughter in Belvedere and a son in Andrews, Ind.; ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
