Pvt. Melvin Fouts Drowns in Belgium
Telegram Received by Father Sunday
Pvt. Melvin C. Fouts, son of Ross Fouts of Estherville, who was reported “missing in action” since March 1 in Belgium was drowned in Belgium on that date according to a telegram received by his father. A telegram received by Mr. Fouts March 21 stated that the soldier had been reported missing in action. He was a member of the signal corps.

The telegram received Sunday said that a letter revealing details would be received soon by Mr. Fouts.

Private Fouts attended the Estherville schools and joined the signal corps three years ago in November. He attended a signal corp school at Des Moines and shortly after completing his signal corp school education he enlisted in the regular army service.
Private Fouts was first stationed in California, then in Pennsylvania and later sent overseas where he had been in England, France and Belgium. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, April 9, 1945)

Memorial for Pvt. Melvin C. Fouts Sunday
Drowned March 1 In Belgian Action
Memorial services will be held Sunday for Pvt. Melvin C. Fouts, son of Ross Fouts of Estherville, who was drowned in Belgium. The services will be held at 2:30 Sunday afternoon in the Union Baptist church.

The church and relatives invited the various service organizations to attend the service.

Private Fouts who was in the signal corps, died in action March 1 and was at first reported missing in action. Private Fouts attended the Estherville school and joined the service three years ago in November.

He attended a signal corps school at Des Moines and shortly after completing his signal corp school education he enlisted in the regular army service.
