Dolliver
Mrs. Fred Davis received word last week that her father, Mr. L.J. Calvin was very ill at the home of his son Joe in Los Angeles, California. Mr. Calvin was a resident of Dolliver many years and a few years ago went to California to live with his son and has since resided in the west. His condition at this writing is still critical with little hope for his recovery. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, January 5, 1937)

L. J. Calvin of Dolliver Dies in Los Angeles
Dolliver – Mrs. Fred Davis received a message on January 2 telling of the death of her father, L.J. Calvin at Los Angeles, Calif., following a paralytic stroke. For many years Mr. Calvin lived in this community, farming a part of the time and later moving to Dolliver. Several years ago he went to Los Angeles to make his home with his son Joe and has since resided in the west. His wife, Mrs. L.J. Calvin of Estherville survives together with three daughters, Mrs. Fred Davis of this place, Mrs. Carl Dennison of Willmar, Minn., and Mrs. Charles Huffman of Estherville. There are also two surviving sons, Joe of Los Angeles, and Hal of Estherville. One daughter Neva passed away about three years ago. There are seven grandchildren, Elmer, Dale, Richard, Freddie and Arla Jean Davis of this place and Robert and Velma Dennison of Willmar, Minn. Mr. Calvin was 65 years of age at his passing and was a man of many fine qualities and his many friends here are grieved to learn of his death. Word was received last Tuesday by Mrs. Fred Davis that her father, Mr. L.J. Calvin, who is in California, had suffered a stroke and was seriously ill. Then on Sunday afternoon she received a call saying he had passed away Saturday morning. Mr. Calvin was a resident of Dolliver and community for the past twenty-five years until about six years ago he went to California where his sons, Joe and Hal were thinking the climate would benefit his health. He leaves to mourn his passing his widow and five children, Joe of California, Mrs. Carl Dennision of Watertown, So. Dakota, Mrs. Fred Davis of Dolliver, Hal and Mrs. Charles Huffman with their mother of Estherville. The family has the sympathy of the entire community. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, January 7, 1937)
