Old Settler Passes Away At Her Home in Oregon
We received a letter today from our old friend, Frank Davey, of Portland, Oregon, that Uncle Sam’s boys had not been very prompt in handling. It contained the news of the death of Mrs. Hannah Howland Jenkins, widow of B.F. Jenkins, who passed away on November 12th. Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins were residents of this city from 1859 to 1874 and will be well remembered by the earlier settlers of Emmet county. Mr. Jenkins with his brother, Adolphus were the owners of a flour and saw mill located on the west side of the river and were the original builders of the present dam at Des Moines street. Many of the buildings were built from lumber sawed at this mill. The Jenkins family lived on the street just north of the roundhouse. Since the death of her husband some years ago, Mrs. Jenkins has lived with her daughter at Kelso, Oregon and was 86 years of age at the time of her death. Quoting from Mr. Davey’s letter, “When we saw her last year she was exceedingly bright, cheerful and intelligent and showed in her old age the charming evidence of the beauty for which she was noted as a young woman.” (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, December 1, 1926)
