Longtime Armstrong Resident Dies
James Manley, 85, longtime resident of the Armstrong vicinity, died in his sleep Saturday [April 6, 1957] at 6 p.m. at his home in Armstrong. Mr. Manley had had a heart condition for some time and had been seriously ill for the past several weeks.

Mr. Manley, son of the late James and Eliza Manley, was born Aug. 10, 1872 at Owasa in Hardin County. He was married to the former Ella Kesler of Eldora on Feb. 28, 1894.

Following their marriage, the Manleys farmed near Radcliffe until 1902 at which time they moved to a farm north of Armstrong. They retired to their home in Armstrong in 1930.

Mr. Manley is survived by his widow, two daughters, Mrs. Alfred (Floy) Michelson of Fort Townsend, Wash. and Mrs. Lloyd (Gladys) Eastman of Armstrong; one son, James E. Manley of Waseca, Minn.; a sister, Mrs. Sarah Cronk of Iowa Falls; nine grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a total of five brothers and sisters.

Mr. Manley was a member of First Methodist Church, Armstrong and of Odd Fellows Lodge.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, 2 p.m. at the Methodist Church in Armstrong, the Rev. R.D. Tappmeyer officiating. Burial will be in the Armstrong Grove cemetery. The body lies in state at Slaba Funeral Home, Armstrong. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, April 8, 1957)
