Mrs. Law, 84, Dies; Rites Are Monday
Mrs. John V. (Maude) Law, 84, died at 7:45 a.m. today at Holy Family Hospital. She had been in poor health since January and was hospitalized 10 days ago.

Maude Hattie Horswell was born Aug. 9, 1874, on a farm east of Armstrong, the daughter of Richard and Dorcas Horswell, pioneers in Emmet County. She received her education in Armstrong schools. She was married John Vance Law Jan. 11, 1896, at Pomeroy. They farmed in the Armstrong area until 1900, when Mr. Law began work as a barber in Armstrong. He died March 21, 1947, and at that time Mrs. Law moved to Estherville to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. Ernest Smith.

The Laws celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1946.

Mrs. Law was a member of the Methodist Church, Rebekah Lodge, Past Noble Grands and had perpetual membership in the American Legion Auxiliary at Armstrong. She was a shut-in member of WSCS at Estherville.

She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Ernest Smith, seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. One son, Vance, preceded her in death in 1955.

Other survivors include sisters, Mrs. Victoria Murray of St. Paul, Minn., Mrs. Mae Laisy of Glendive, Mont.; Mrs. Bertha Johnson of Sioux City; Mrs. Blance Woodbury of Upper Mt. Claire, N.J., and brother Garfield of Armstrong; Walter of Warren, Minn., and Blaine of Wilmington, Cal.

Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at the Armstrong Methodist Church, the Rev. Roger Tappmeyer officiating. The Slaba Funeral Home of Armstrong is in charge of arrangements.

Friend may call at the Ernest Smith home at 921 1st Ave. N., Estherville, from late tomorrow afternoon until time of services. Burial will be in Armstrong Grove Cemetery. A memorial for the chapel fund of the Estherville Methodist Church and music fund of the Armstrong Methodist Church has been established. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, May 8, 1959)
