Armstrong: John Whitesell died on Sunday following a lingering illness, his death being caused by gangrene setting in from diabetes. He has been failing in health for the past few years and several weeks ago he entered the hospital at Estherville. He was apparently improving when a sudden change came and he passed away Sunday evening.

John Whitesell was born on June 30, 1880, at Iowa Falls and died March 31, 1935 at Estherville at the age of 54 years and 10 months. He spent his first years at Iowa Falls, where he was united in marriage to Miss Olivia Hoyt of Hubbard. To this union were born three children, two daughters, Mrs. A. L. Kingery of Klemme, Mrs. Lloyd Paris of Armstrong and one son, John, also of Armstrong.

He came to Armstrong in 1911 and has since lived in this vicinity as a farmer with the exception of two years in the implement business. He leaves to mourn his death his wife and children, also one nephew, Kenneth Hoyt of Eldora, who has made his home with the Whitesell family for several years: eleven sisters and two brothers. The sisters are Mrs. John Stout, Oelwein, Mrs. Orville Steward, Mrs. John Marshall, Mrs. Charles Ladd, Mrs. Anna Highley, Mrs. Elmer Kesler of Iowa Falls, Mrs. Guy Kesler of Armstrong, Mrs. Eva Mark of Zearing, Mrs. O.S. Hall and Mrs. Jack Hays of Monterey Park, California and Mrs. O.S. Windecker of Belmond. The two brothers are William of Iowa Falls and Paul of Waterloo.

Funeral services were held in the Armstrong Methodist church Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. E. Clifton. Burial was made at Iowa Falls in the Union cemetery, Thursday. (Algona Upper Iowa Des Moines, Algona, IA, April 11, 1935)
