Mrs. J.C. Lilley Passes Monday
Burial of Respected Woman Made in Illinois
The death of Mrs. John C. Lilley late Monday afternoon came as a distinct shock to hundreds of friends in Estherville where she had made her home since 1903. While Mrs. Lilley has been seriously ill for the past six weeks few realized her critical condition. She had been in poor health all winter but was able to look after household duties and care for her aged mother.Sadie Pauline Kessler [Kesslar] was born on June 26, 1881, at Sandwich, Illinois, one of three children of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Kessler. She was married on September 19, 1900, in Aurora, Ill., and they came to a farm near Terril to make their home. Three years later they moved to this city and have resided here continuously since then.
Mrs. Lilley was an esteemed member of the Methodist Episcopal church and will be long remembered in this community for her sweetness of character and neighborly kindness.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist Episcopal church at two o’clock this afternoon. Burial will be made Thursday in the family plot in Oswego, Ill. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, April 2, 1930)
Mrs. John Lilley Passed Away on Monday Last
Mrs. J.C. Lilley died at the family home on E. Howard Street Monday afternoon, March 31st. She had been ill all winter and confined to her bed about six weeks and at times suffered excruciatingly but patiently.She was born Sadie Pauline Kessler, one of three children to Mr. and Mrs. Chris Kessler in Sandwich, Ill. on June 26, 1881. On September 19, 1900 in Aurora, Ill., she married John C. Lilley and they set up their home on the farm near Terril, Iowa. In 1903 they took up residence in Estherville and have since lived here continuously.
Mrs. Lilley was an esteemed member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and will be long remembered in this community for her thoughtful readiness in ministry to every one in need, for her natural kindness and cheerfulness and for her uncompromising integrity of character.
The funeral was held at the Methodist Episcopal Church at 2 p.m. on Wednesday. Burial is being made Thursday in the family plot at Oswego, Illinois. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, April 2, 1930)

Former Mayor’s Wife Passes Away
Mrs. John C. Lilley, 48, died Monday afternoon at her home after being confined to her bed for the past six weeks. She has been in poor health all winter but she has been able to be up and around until, about six weeks ago when she began suffering with blood poisoning in her leg.Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at the Methodist Episcopal church at 2. The Rev. W.A. WinterStein officiated at the service.
Burial will be made today at the family plot at Oswego, Ill. Pallbearers were Carl Jeglum, Charles Bixby, R.H. Green, Charles Dayton, John Hemmingson and Dell Blake.
Sadie Pauline Kessler was born June 26, 1881, in Sandwich, Ill., and was one of the three children born to Mr. and Mrs. Charles [Chris] Kessler. On September 19, 1900, in Aurora, Ill., she married John C. Lilley and they made their home on a farm near Terril. In 1903 they moved to Estherville and have lived here since that time. Mrs. Lilley was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and was a faithful worker in church activities.
She is survived by her husband, who served Estherville two terms as mayor, and her mother, Mrs. Mattie Kessler, who has made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Lilley. One sister and one brother preceded her in death. She also leaves her cousin, Guy F. Wilder of this city. (Estherville News, Estherville, IA, April 3, 1930)
