Rites for Capt. James S. Knipe Are Tomorrow
Full military rites will be held 2 p.m. tomorrow at Armstrong Methodist church for Captain James Stuart Knipe, returned war dead. Knipe, son of Dr. and Mrs. James B. Knipe of Armstrong arrived home this morning with military escort. The Armstrong American Legion post will have charge of burial rites assisted by the VFW. Rev. Dwight Bonham will officiate and burial will be at Armstrong Grove cemetery.The deceased was killed in action Apr. 12, 1945 on Okinawa while serving as battalion surgeon with the 381st regiment, 96th division. He previously had participated in the invasion of Leyte island in the Philippines, October 1944.
March, 1944, Knipe had received assignment as battalion surgeon when stationed at Camp White, Ore. Later, he received amphibious training in California and was sent to Hawaii, July 1944.
Born Nov. 18, 1918 at Estherville he received his education in the Armstrong public schools, graduating from high school in 1936. June 1940, he received a BA from the State University of Iowa, and Feb. 20, 1943, graduated from SUI medical school. He received a reserve commission in the army medical corps while at the university.
June 8, 1943, he married Kathleen Mary Newman of Clear Lake. A son, James Stuart Knipe, Jr., was born to the couple, April 17, 1944. His wife and son now live in St. Paul.
Survivors in addition to his wife, son and parents are two sisters, Mrs. W.B. Campbell of Gilmore City, and Marilyn Knipe of Minneapolis, and one brother, W.J. Knipe of Spencer. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, February 12, 1949)
