Mrs. MacDonald and Mrs. John McMahon Die During Week
Mrs. Sylvia Macdonald Dies at West Liberty

Mrs. Sylvia Macdonald, niece of Mrs. F.A. Macdonald and cousin of Mrs. W.G. Nichols, passed away at West Liberty Tuesday [August 18, 1925] evening. She had been in Chicago during the past winter with her cousin, Robert Macdonald and was just returning to Estherville. She had stopped at West Liberty to visit at the home of a cousin, Mrs. Irma Evans, and it was here that her death occurred of neuralgia of the heart.

Mrs. Macdonald, whose maiden name was Sylvia Greig, was born and raised at West Liberty and made her home there until she came to this county with her husband, Harry Macdonald, more than ten years ago. Armstrong was their home until after Mr. Macdonald’s death. For the past year she had lived in Estherville and Chicago. She was nearly seventy years of age but had always enjoyed the best of health and was as spry and active as a young girl. She had lived a life of service, cheerfully and lovingly devoting her years to the care of those about her. Her brother spent the last months of his life with her, and her husband was in poor health for many years. The younger members of the families of her cousins bestowed upon her all the love that they could have felt for an aunt. Her sudden death was a great shock and her loss an irreparable one for the ones to whom she was so dear.

The remains will be brought to Armstrong for burial. (Vindicator and Republic, Estherville, IA, August 19, 1925)

Mrs. Sylvia MacDonald Died At West Liberty
Death Came Suddenly As She Was Returning From Visit With Chicago Relatives
The body of Mrs. Sylvia MacDonald arrived in Estherville Friday morning from West Liberty and was taken to Armstrong where she was buried beside her husband. Mrs. MacDonald was well known to people in this county, having lived in the town of Armstrong for many years. She had been visiting with relatives at Chicago and was returning to Armstrong by way of West Liberty and stopped off to visit her cousin, Mrs. Irma Morse. She was suddenly taken ill and death came almost instantly from neuralgia of the heart. Mrs. Sylvia MacDonald, formerly Miss Sylvia Greig [Gregg], was born at West Liberty, Iowa. She was educated in the schools at that place and spent most of her young womanhood there. About ten years ago she came with her husband to Emmet county and settled at Armstrong where they lived until Mr. MacDonald died about two years ago. Since that time she has lived in Estherville and Chicago. At the time of her death she was sixty-eight years old but in spite of her advanced age was always active and every ready to lend a helping hand. She was a devoted wife and during her husband’s illness worked long and faithfully that he might have every comfort possible. Her life was filled with loving deeds and each day was marked by some act of kindness which she performed for her family and friends. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her for she was a friend to all, both young and old. Funeral services were held from the home of the deceased’s brother-in-law, F.A. MacDonald, in this city on Saturday afternoon, Rev. H.L. Olmstead officiating. Interment was made in the Armstrong cemetery. Out of town people at the funeral were Robert MacDonald and Del Missler, of Chicago, Mrs. Irma Morse, of West Liberty, and Willet Grieg [Gregg] of Washington. The many friends in this community extend their sympathy to the bereaved relatives and friends. (Estherville Democrat, Estherville, IA, August 26, 1925)
