Mrs. Julia Gangestad Dies at 87
Armstrong – Mrs. Julia Malinda Gangestad, 87, a resident of the Halfa area for nearly 45 years, died at her home at Fairmont yesterday.Mrs. Gangestad had been in ill health for the past several years. She was hospitalized from Feb. 5 to March 14 and had since been bed-ridden at her home. Death was attributed to complications of old age.
She was born Dec. 16, 1873 at Badger, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Skie [Skeie]. On Jan. 22, 1892, she was married to Sam Gangestad and the couple made their home at Badger until 1902 when they moved to a farm near Halfa.
After Mr. Gangestad’s death in 1929, Mrs. Gangestad continued to life on the farm with her son, Clifford, until 1946 when she moved to Fairmont.
She was a member of the Halfa Ladies Aid, the Lutheran Ladies Aid of Armstrong and the Flower and Garden Club at Fairmont.
Survivors include five sons, Henry, Fairmont; Edwin, St. James; Elmer, Brainerd; Melvin, Estherville; and Clifford, Halfa; and five daughters, Mrs. W.E. (Sadie) Hanson, Ottosen; Carol, Los Angeles; Mrs. Harold (Madeline) Jorgensen, Mason City; Mrs. Wilmot (Harriet) Edwards, Ceylon; and Mrs. Charles (Jeneva) Prull, East Chain, Minn.
Also surviving is a sister, Mrs. Josephine Johnson, Amboy, Minn., 39 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband and two daughters, Bernice and Mrs. Don (Mildred) Ritter.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. (3 p.m. Minnesota time) Friday at the Nazareth Lutheran Church at Aramstrong. Burial will be in Armstrong Grove Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Slaba Funeral Home from noon Thursday until time of services. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, August 9, 1961)
