Dr. John A. Finlayson Dead
Passed Away at 11:30 on Tuesday Morning
On Tuesday [May 9, 1905] morning at 11:30 occurred the death of Dr. John A. [Alexander] Finlayson, one of the prominent citizens of Armstrong, after a few days’ illness from appendicitis. He was taken ill on Wednesday last but the course of the disease was so rapid and the nature of it so virulent that an operation was impossible though on Sunday it was thought he was better for he seemed to be resting easier. The funeral will be held Thursday at 1:00 p.m. from the Presbyterian church and the burial will be made in Armstrong.

Deceased was born in Carroll county, Illinois, September 12, 1859. He was a graduate of the Kentucky school of medicine at Louisville and a member of the class of 1892 and came to Armstrong to engage in the practice of his profession on the following September. June 6, 1894 he was united in marriage with Grace G. Robinson, daughter of B.F. Robinson of Armstrong. He had been very successful as a medical practitioner and had accumulated a handsome fortune and in addition there is a life insurance of $10,000. He was well known throughout the east end of the county and had a wide circle of friends. Dr. Finlayson was a self made man, working his way through school and was engaged in the work of teaching school prior to his entry into college. News reached town yesterday that Dr. Finlayson of Armstrong died from an attack of appendicitis on Tuesday. He was one of the prominent citizens of that section and had lived there ever since the town started. (Algona Advance, Algona, IA, May 11, 1905)
