Miss Nellie Doughty Dead
Miss Nellie Doughty died very suddenly at Armstrong, Monday [October 6, 1913] evening, following an operation for appendicitis. She was taken sick Friday evening and was operated upon Monday afternoon. This is sad news to any friends of the Doughty family in this county. She had made her home with her brother, T.W. Doughty, for many years. Her sister, Mrs. William Ketchen, of Boise, Idaho, was visiting at the Doughty home at the time of her death. A telephone message was received here Tuesday morning by Jas. Espeset announcing the death of Miss Helen Doughty of Armstrong, who had been ill for some time. Miss Doughty was well and very favorably known in the eastern and southeastern part of the county. She was a sister of Mr. Tom Doughty and was a very estimable lady. Obituary will be published next week. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, October 8, 1913)Obituary – Miss Nellie Doughty
The death of Miss Nellie Doughty of Armstrong, of which mention was made last week, came as a great shock to the community in which she resided. Her death followed an operation for appendicitis.Funeral was held Thursday several intimate friends from Estherville attending.
From the Armstrong Journal we get the following sketch of the deceased:
Miss Nell Doughty was born at Carron Foot Dunfries-shire, Scotland, June 27, 1867 [per cemetery records, 1866] . About twenty-seven years ago she came to America and for a time kept house for her brother, George, who at that time lived on a farm in Jack Creek township. She afterwards returned to Scotland, and remained there several years. She again came to American and about four years ago, helped to establish the Doughty home in this city, to which we have previously referred. Besides T.W. and George, there is another brother living, a doctor, practicing medicine in England. She had one sister, Mrs. Ketchum, of Boise, Idaho, and whose privilege it had been to spend the entire summer here with her, and who is still here. When a child in Scotland, she united with the Presbyterian church and had always been a faithful member. In the work of the church she was always active, and now has gone to reap the reward of a life well spent. If Miss Doughty had had any warning of the oncoming of her fatal sickness, she kept her own council, as no member of the household heard her complain.
So it was that those to whom she was so near and dear were called upon to say an earthly good-bye to Miss Nell. Their hearts are town with anguish by the severing of the golden tendrils of love that bound them so closely together. God does all things for the best, so they must console themselves with the assurance that she is waiting for them in heaven. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, October 15, 1913)
