Death of Mrs. R.I. Cratty
Mrs. Estella Cratty, wife of R.I. Cratty, died at her home two miles north-east of Armstrong, Tuesday [December 22, 1896] evening at 7 o’clock. Mrs. Cratty was well known to nearly everybody in this community. Her maiden name was Estella Canon [Lovena Estella Canon]. She was born in Sullivan county, N.Y., October 18th, 1849, and in 1868 moved to Ogle county, Illinois, with her parents. In 1873 she came to Emmet county, Iowa, and was married to R.I. Cratty in 1877. Four children, three girls and one boy, besides the husband, live to mourn her death.

Mrs. Cratty was ever known as a kind and loving woman. Never in life was she of an aggressive disposition, but always kind and loving, firm and gentle, a pure soul that drew all towards her. She cast an influence more powerful than any of a driving disposition could exert – always by her life-drawing her associates to a purer and more elevated position. Such women are the blessings of God. They come in the world as ministering angels, and leave behind them ewer of good.

The cause of the death was apoplexy. She was taken sick Sunday but rallied and it was thought she would recover. Tuesday morning she grew suddenly worse and it was known that the end was near. The fuenall services were held in the Presbyterian church yesterday afternoon.

Mr. Cratty and the children are left to mourn the loss of an earthly jewel; a bright light is taken from their home. They know the perfect rest she is enjoying, and feel the comfort of her being among the chosen of heaven. The most true sympathy is extended from all sides. What friends can do to ease their grief they will never lack. The entire community grieve with them in their hour of sorrow – Armstrong Journal (Semi-weekly Northern Vindicator, Estherville, IA, December 29, 1896)
