Rites Set For Edward Swanson, 84
Edward Swanson, 84, of Armstrong, died at 6 a.m. today at Holy Family Hospital, after being in ill health for the past year.Mr. Swanson was born April 17, 1875, at De Kalb, Ill., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Swanson. He received his education in the De Kalb area and moved with his parents to the Terril area, when he was a young man. After farming near Terril for several years, he moved to the Estherville area and continued farming. He also operated a threshing outfit around Gruver area for several years.
He was married to Emma Hansen in 1897 at Estherville. After marriage he farmed in the Estherville area until 1922, when the Swansons moved into Estherville and he was employed at Harker-Beauman Lumber Company. Later, they moved to California, living there for several years. Mr. Swanson has spent the last year living with his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Carlson of Armstrong.
Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Clifford Wycoff, Estherville; Mrs. Ed Carlson, Armstrong; Mrs. Louis Ries, Ringsted; Mrs. Clarence Knatt [Knapp] of San Diego, Calif., and Mrs. George Greener, also of San Diego.
Also surviving are one brother, Bert Swanson, Estherville, seven grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Swanson was preceded in death by his wife, parents, four brothers and one grandchild.
Family services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sandin-Fuhrman Funeral Home. Public services are to be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Methodist Church of Estherville with the Rev. W.R. Noland officiating.
Friends may call at the Sandin-Fuhrman Funeral Home from Thursday afternoon until noon Saturday, when the body will be taken to the First Methodist Church to lie in state until time of services. Pallbearers are all grandsons, Dale Wycoff, Larry Wycoff, LaVern Ries, Donald Justice, Clarence Halstead and Jerry Hansen. The casket will not be opened following services. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, January 20, 1960)
