Ira H. Canon was born in Fremont, Sullivan county, N.Y. Sept 16, 1867 [1851]. In 1867 he started westward with his parents and halted in Ohio one year. In 1868 the family moved to Illinois where they lived until 1872, when they came to Iowa and located on a homestead in Armstrong Grove township. Two years later the deceased bought a farm where he lived until 1893 when the family moved to Armstrong. On Sept. 16, 1880 he was married to Miss Helen Weller and to this union five children were born, one dying in infancy. Those living are Charles, of Greenville, Illinois, Mrs. Florence Miller of Iding, Kan., and Fred and Ben at home, besides the bereaved wife and children, 4 brothers and 1 sister survive him.Deceased suffered all the privations of pioneer life but stood with fortitude. Mr. Canon commanded the highest respect of all who knew him, and the fact that he was Justice of Peace for 20 years shows the esteem in which he was held for fairness and honesty.
The funeral was held Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock and was conducted by Rev. Sutton, of the Free Methodist church, who delivered a fine sermon.
The remains were laid to rest in the Armstrong cemetery. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, August 28, 1912)
