Former Cresco Boy in Army Is Dead From Appendicitis
E. Boyd Campbell, son of Mr. and Mrs. E.J. Campbell, former residents of Hobarton, now residing at Strawberry Point, died December 18, as the result of a sudden attack of appendicitis at Camp Mills, Hempstead, N.Y.The young man moved with his parents from Hobarton about ten years ago. A year and a half ago he enlisted in the National Guards at Fort Sheridan, Wyoming. He served all last winter on the Mexican border, being stationed at Deming, N.M. At the close of the border troubles, when the soldiers were being moved for service in the present world conflict, he was made a corporal of the 148th Field Artillery, 56th brigade, 41st Division, and was sent with his company to Camp Mills. The attack came upon him while he was on duty and was so severe that he lived but two hours, dying in an ambulance while being transferred from the camp to a hospital. The body was shipped to Aurora, Iowa, where funeral services were conducted at the Christian church, of which he was a member, on Monday, December 24, the Rev. J.F. Childs, of Tower Hill, Ill., officiating.
Besides his parents, four sisters and one brother survive: Mrs. F.J. Thompson of Algona; Mrs. E.J. Kenney, of Mason City; Mrs. Earl Quitmyer, of Aurora; Miss May Campbell, of Cedar Rapids; and Donald Campbell, of Strawberry Point.
Mr. and Mrs. Thompson went to Aurora on December 20 to attend the funeral, returning on Christmas day. (Kossuth County Advance, Algona, IA, January 9, 1918)
