Aged Pioneer Dies; Funeral is Held Here
Swea City, May 3 – The Frank thomsons drove to Aurora Saturday, returning Sunday after attending services for Mrs. Thomson’s father, Ewen J. Campbell, Saturday. Mr. Campbell was born in McGregor, coming to Emmet county when three years old. At the time of his death he was the oldest resident of Emmet county. His father, E.B. Campbell, was the first postmaster in Emmet county, being appointed at Armstrong Grove.In 1885 he married Katherine Lauritzen, and there are five living children, Mrs. F.J. Thomson, Swea City, Mrs. Eli Gregg, Pasadena, Mrs. E. Zentmyre, Aurora, Mrs. F.B. Brocksus, Waterloo, and Donald L., Waterloo. One son, Boyd, died in 1918 in the service. There are 16 grandchildren, one great grandchildren. All the children except Mrs. Gregg were present at the funeral.
Three sisters survive, Mrs. Anna Wadsworth, Portland, Ore.; Mrs. Nellie Stickney, Vancouver, Wash.; Mrs. David Blair, Maza, N.D. Mrs. Blair came before her brother died. In 1922 he married Mrs. Laura Brinkley, who also survives.
Mr. Campbell has made his home in Algona the last few years, and died there Thursday after a stroke suffered ten days previously. Funeral services were held in the Laird chapel Friday, and Saturday the body was taken to Aurora, where services were held in the Christian church, of which he was a member. He was 70 years old. Obituary
Ewen J. Campbell, son of Ewen Boyd Campbell and Eliza Yates Campbell, was born in Clayton County, Iowa, June 26, 1861, and died at his home in Algona, Iowa, April 28, 1932 at the age of 71 years, 10 months and 2 days.When three years of age he with his parents settled near Armstrong, Iowa, where he grew to manhood. About thirty years ago he engaged in business in Hovart, where he conducted a general store for four years. Then he moved to Arlington, Fayette County, Iowa, where he resided until 1912 when he moved to Algona where he continued to make his home until he departed this life.
He accepted Christ as his Savior when a young man and united with the Presbyterian church at Armstrong. When in Fayette county he transferred his church membership to the Church of Christ where he retained his membership until death.
In 1885 he was united in marriage to Miss Catherien Laurtizen of Armstrong. To this union were born six children, Mrs. F.J. Thompson, Swea City, Iowa, Mrs. Eli Gregg, Pasadena, California, Mrs. Carl Quitmeyer, Aurora, Iowa, Mrs. F.B. Brocksus, Waterloo, Iowa, Ewen Boyd Campbell, who departed this life from Camp Merrit, New Jersey, Dec. 19, 1917 while in the service of his country, and Donald L. Campbell, Waterloo. Also sixteen grandchildren and one great grandchild survive. His three sisters are Mrs. Anona C. Wadsworth of Portland, Oregon, Mrs. Nellie Stickney of Vancouver, Washington, and Mrs. David S. Blair, Maza, N. Dakota.
July 31, 1922 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Laura Beckley, who with all his children except Ewen Boyd survive him. Though a member of another church Brother Campbell was a faithful attendant at the services of the Church of the Nazarene in Algona, where the evening before he was stricken he voluntarily lead in prayer, thanking God for being able to attend church and later in the services he testified to the love of God in his heart an expressed his purpose to be true to God.
His last sickness came Monday, April 18, while in the country, from a paralytic stroke. And altho all that loving hands and medical skill could do was done to restore health and give comfort he answered the summons at 5:10 Thursday morning, April 28. We bow our heads in humble submission to the will of God and say, “Thy will be done.”
The remains were brought back here for burial. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Union church north of town. Rev. Broyles assisted by Rev. Wade of Oelwein had charge of the services. Mrs. Rodney Miller and Mrs. Dale Miller sang, “The Old Rugged Cross,” “Jesus Savior of My Soul.” They were accompanied by Mrs. Arthur Stapel. Burial was made in the Union cemetery. The loacal offerings were many and beautiful. Many old friends from Oelwein, Arlington, Waterloo and this vicinity attended.
