Burkhead Rites Today
Funeral services for Ernest J. [Jacob] Burkhead, 82, Armstrong resident for most of his life, were to be held at 2 p.m. today at the First Methodist church in Armstrong, the Rev. S.E. Polovina officiating. Burial was to be in Armstrong Grove cemetery. Mr. Burkhead died Sunday [March 7, 1954]. He was born Sept. 21, 1871. Surviving his death are two daughters, Mrs. Leonard Madden of Armstrong and Mrs. Ernest Johnson of Springville, and two sons, Arnold of Armstrong and Lyle of Salina, Kans. Funeral Rites Conducted for E.J. Burkhead
Funeral services for E.J. Burkhead, 82, were conducted Tuesday afternoon, March 9, from the Armstrong First Methodist church with the Rev. S.E. Polovina officiating. Interment was made in Armstrong Grove cemetery.A resident of the Armstrong Community most of his life, Mr. Burkhead died Sunday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Leonard Madden who lives near here.
Ernest Jacob Burkhead, son of George and Sarah Burkhead, was born Sept. 21, 1871, at Brandon, Benton County, Iowa.
On March 6, 1901, he was united in marriage to Minnie Berggren and to this union five children were born, one dying in infancy.
His boyhood was spent on the farm in Benton county, moving to the Armstrong vicinity when a young man. The remainder of his life was spent in this community except for a few years at Truman, Minn., Tego, Wis., and Swea City.
He was a member of the Methodist church since boyhood being faithful in attendance and in all church activities as long as his health permitted.
His wife preceded him in death Oct. 25, 1953.
He is survived by his four children, Lyle of Salina, Kan., Arnold of Armstrong, Mrs. Ernest Johnson of Springville, Ia., and Mrs. Leonard Madden of Armstrong; and a sister, Mrs. John Moose, Santa Rosa, Calif.; a brother, O. Z. Burkhead, Clemons, Ia., seven grandchildren and other relatives. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, March 17, 1954)
