Boy Killed When Hit By Truck
Alvin Bloyer of Maple Hill Victim of Crash
Was Riding Bicycle When Accident Occurred
Alvin Bloyer, 8, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Bloyer of near Maple Hill, was struck and killed almost instantly at 6:30 p.m. yesterday when he was struck by an oil truck driven by Harvey Christensen of Ringsted. The boy had just started toward his home on his bicycle from the farm of O.K. Berven, about three-fourths of a mile east of the Bloyer farm when he was struck by the truck.

The force of the impact carried the boy and the bicycle for nearly 40 feet, crushing the boy’s skull. Members of the Berven family, who rushed to the road in front of their farm as soon as the accident of their farm as soon as the accident happened, thought the boy was dead when he was picked up but later he showed some signs of life. Dr. G.H. West of Armstrong was called but the boy died a few minutes after he arrived.,

Emerged from Lane
According to Christensen, driver of the truck, he was unaware of the boy’s presence until he darted out of the Verven [Berven] lane directly in the path of the oncoming truck. Christensen said he was only travelling about 25 or 30 miles an hour but was unable to stop in time to avoid hitting the youth.

The bicycle was struck by the right front fender and bumper of the truck and marks on the vehicle showed that his head had struck a platform projecting at the side of the truck to haul barrels of oil.

So great was the impact that a heavy bar bumper of the truck was bent several inches.

Two pools of blood in the road showed where the boy was dropped from the front end of the truck.

Driver Not Blamed
Sheriff Cliff Fredericksen and Coroner Fred Sternborg were called to the accident but no action was taken against the driver of the truck.

Ringsted residents who stopped at the accident said Christensen was not known as a reckless driver.

The body of the boy was taken to Armstrong by Dr. West.

Alvin Bloyer, 9, Killed in Crash Friday
Collided With Oil Truck
Accident Happened at Ole K. Berven Farm Near Halfa; Truck Driven By Harvey Christiansen
While riding his bicycle out onto the road from the Ole K. Berven farm, two and a half miles west of Halfa, Friday afternoon about 5:30 Alvin Bloyer, 9, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Bloyer was struck by an oil truck driven by Harvey Christiansen of Ringsted and almost instantly killed.

Alvin had been at the Berven home and was going to his home about three-fourths of a mile west of the Berven home, when the accident happened. As he turned west out of the drive way he collided with the oil truck going east. The boy was thrown about forty feet and his body was badly mangled.

Dr. G.H. West of Armstrong was called, but the boy died a few minutes after his arrival. Sheriff Cliff Fredericksen and Fred Sternborg, Jr., coroner, were called to the scene of the accident.

Christiansen said that he was traveling only about 25 or 30 miles per hour and did not see the boy until he was in the trucks’ direct path. Marks on the truck showed where the boy’s head had hit the platform that projected out on the side of the car to haul oil barrels. No action has been taken against Christiansen.

Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at 1:30 at the home and at the Presbyterian church in Maple Hill at 2 o’clock. The Rev. Arthur Bailey officiated at both services and was assisted by his father, the Rev. Arthur G. Bailey, pastor of the local Presbyterian church. Burial was in the Armstrong cemetery. Alvin Bloyer Killed When Bicycle Hits Tank Wagon
Alvin Bloyer, 9, was instantly killed last Friday evening about six-thirty when he rode his bicycle out of a lane in front of an oil truck driven by Harvey Christensen, of Ringsted. The lad is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Bloyer who reside south of Maple Hill.

The boy had been at the O.K. Berven farm and was returning home on his bicycle. The driver of the truck says he was traveling at a very reasonable rate of speed. However, the boy came out so suddenly from the lane leading to the highway and was so near him when he came out there was no opportunity to stop or change his course.

It was apparent the boy was carried by the truck some forty-five or fifty feet. The boy and bicycle were struck probably by a fender and his head hit the part of the car where the barrels are carried. His head was badly crushed and death soon followed the accident. Neighbors were soon on the scene and Dr. G.H. West of Armstrong was called at once. The boy first appeared dead but showed some sign of life but passed away soon after the accident.

Sheriff Fredericksen and Coroner Sternborg were called at once. However there was no blame attached to the driver and no inquest was held. It was just one of those horrible accidents that occur and now almost daily. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, May 22, 1935)
