Charles Ogilvie Died At Armstrong
Pioneer Resident of This County – Almost Ninety-three Years of Age – Funeral Thursday
After a severe illness of ten days Chas. Oglivie passed away at his home in Armstrong, Iowa, Tuesday evening, May 12, 1925, being in his ninety-third year. He was born at South Kirriemuir, Forfarshire, Scotland, November 2, 1832. At the age of 16 years he came to Carlinford, Canada, near where he taught school for a number of years. In 1869 he came with the Geo. Stewart family to Irvington, Iowa. In the spring of 1870 the James Mitchell family, cousins with whom he had made his home while in Canada, homesteaded the farm south of Armstrong known as the Alex Allen place. To this prairie farm Mr. Oglivie came in the autumn of 1870 and made his home with these relatives until his marriage in February, 1900, to Mrs. Laura Dutton. As a pioneer citizen of this prairie region he endured the hardships with a perseverance and integrity that, with his honesty and humanity, held for him the respect of his fellows. He was among the first schoolmasters of the early settlers and held many offices of trust in this community. He was one of the organizers of the local I.O.O.F. lodge and also one of the first shopkeepers here, having opened a store in the country a year or so before this town was laid out. Shortly after he moved his store building to Armstrong where he continued in business until 1916. He is among the last of Armstrong Grove’s early settlers and with his passing this community loses one who has helped much with its upbuilding. He leaves his wife, four step-daughters and many other relatives to mourn his loss. Funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon conducted by Rev. Carver and the I.O.O.F. lodge and burial was in the Armstrong Cemetery. – Armstrong Journal (Estherville Democrat, Estherville, IA, May 20, 1925 / Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, May 20, 1925)
