Dies at 88 in Hospital

William Swift, 88, longtime and well-known, Rock Island retired engineer of Estherville died yesterday afternoon [September 21, 1965] at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Hospital.

Mr. Swift had been taken by ambulance to the hospital yesterday after suffering a heart attack. The coronary attack was suffered about 11 a.m. shortly after he had entered the Anderson-Schenck store.

Mr. Swift began his career on the Rock Island here about 1900 where he became a fireman and later an engineer remaining in that work until his retirement in 1952.

William A. Swift was born May 16, 1877 at Webster City the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Swift. He received his education in the Webster City schools and at Emmetsburg Telegraphy School in Emmetsburg.

He was married in September 1906 to Mary Bagan of Estherville. The couple was married here and spent their entire married life in Estherville. Mrs. Swift died in 1961.

Mr. Swift was a member of St. Patrick's Church.

He is survived by three sons; William of Burlington, Robert of Baltimore, Md. and Maurice of Yorba Linda, Calif., and eight grandchildren.

Final rites will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church, Rev. James Fangman officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.

Friends may call at Fuhrman Funeral Home on Friday and until time of services Saturday.

A Rosary will be said Friday at 8 p.m. at the funeral home. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, September 22, 1965)
