Estherville – Funeral services for Sylvia [Alpha] Balmer, 95, of Edina, Minn. will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 28 at the Estherville Lutheran Church in Estherville with Pastor Ray Miller officiating. Interment will be held at Lincoln Township Cemetery in Dolliver. She died on Sunday, June 22, 2003 at the N.C. Little Memorial Hospital in Edina.Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church only on Saturday.
Sylvia was born on April 13, 1908 in Wallingford, the daughter of L.L. and Tilda (Bendickson) Nelson. She received her education in the rural country schools. Then she graduated from Waldorf schools in Forest City. Sylvia received her nurses training at Iowa Lutheran College in Des Moines.
She worked as a registered nurse at the Bernie Hospital and later Holy Family Hospital in Estherville.
On May 23, 1943, she was united in marriage to Harry Balmer. After their marriage, the couple farmed the family farm near Dolliver until 1951, when they moved to a farm near Armstrong. They farmed there until retiring in 1976 and moving into Estherville. In 1993, they moved to Edina to be near their children. Harry died November 21, 1995.
Sylvia was a member of the Estherville Lutheran Church.
Sylvia is survived by two children, Larry Balmer and his wife, Alice; Cheryl Hammer and her husband, Jerry all of Bloomington, Minn.; and also be her two grandchildren, David and Alison Balmer also of Bloomington.
She has been preceded in death by her parents; husband; three sisters and two brothers. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, June 25, 2003)
