Passes This Morning
The Handeland home on East Lawn was saddened this morning by the sudden death of Bert Handeland, 58, well known resident of this city. About two weeks ago Mr. Handeland was warned by his physician to be very careful as his heart was not functioning normally. He did not tell his family nor anyone else of his condition, however. He seemed to be in good health and spirits when he retired that night but had a heart attack about 1:30 and passed away.

The day before his death Mr. Handeland attended the funeral of Carl Jeglum at the Lutheran church and no one expected that he would be the next one to be carried into the church for the last time. Mr. Handeland has been an interested and active member of the Estherville Lutheran church during the greater part of his residence here and at various times held offices within the church.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been completed but it is expected they will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Estherville Lutheran church with the Rev. L. A. Mathre in charge.

Bertel Olai Handeland was born in Ole and Berta Handeland at Fjolberg parish, Norway, Feb. 18, 1879. Baptized as a child he was confirmed in the Lutheran church at the usual age. He emigrated to America coming directly to Estherville where he has since resided.

On March 11, 1908 he was united in marriage to Belle Quinsland of Lake Park. Mr. Handeland was at various times employed by the Rock Island railroad as a carpenter. Since his employment ceased eight years ago he has worked at the building trade except for four years when he operated an oil station on his property at the east edge of the city.

He is survived by his widow and the following children, Mrs. Beaulah Mathson, Selma of Estherville, Mrs. Melvin Christian of Ringsted, Oliver of Minneapolis, Mrs. Ernest Griffith of Spirit Lake and Melvin, Helen and Mable of Estherville. Also by three brothers , Ole Handeland of Duluth, Lars Handeland of Estherville and Johannes O. Handeland in Norway; one sister, Martha O. Handeland in Norway and four grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by two sons, both named Harold Edwin, one died in 1919 and one in 1924 at the respective ages of 3 and two years. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, March 23, 1937)
