Gerhard Borlaug, 71, Dies; Rites To Be Friday
Ernest Philip Gerhard Borlaug, 71, died at 8 p.m. yesterday at Holy Family Hospital.

Death was attributed to complications resulting from injuries suffered in a fall a week and one-half ago. He had been in poor health for the last few years.

Family funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Reese Funeral Home. Public services will follow at 2 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Rev. W.H. Discher officiating.

Burial will be in East Side Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the local American Legion and VFW posts. The casket will not be opened following the final rites.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 9 a.m. Thursday until 10:30 a.m. Friday when following family services the casket will be taken to the church.

Mr. Borlaug was born Dec. 29, 1893 in Denmark [Decorah, Iowa], the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Borlaug. He received his education in rural Calmar schools.

April 29, 1920, he married Ede Grundeland at Washington Prairie, Ia. They lived at Calmar until moving to Estherville in 1927. He worked for Hinsch and Cook Produce and for many years until his retirement in 1961, for Butterfield Produce Co.

He was a member of the Estherville Immanuel Lutheran Church. He had been active in the American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps, city band, and World War I Barracks.

Survivors include his wife, Ede, of Estherville; a son, Victor, of San Jose, Calif.; three grandchildren; and one sister, Mabel Borlaug, of Estherville.

He was preceded in death by his parents. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, August 17, 1965)

To Attend Funeral
Members of World War I Veterans, Emmet County Barracks No. 1896, are requested to wear their caps and to meet Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church for the funeral services of Gerhard Borlaug.

The Borlaug funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Graveside services will be conducted by the World War I veterans and local American Legion post. Mr. Borlaug was born Dec. 29, 1893 in Decorah. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, August 18, 1965)
