Gustav Walen Rites Today
Gustav Andrew Walen, 90, Estherville, died Friday, April 21, 1972, at Holy Family Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. today in Estherville Lutheran Church with the Rev. Stephen Engelstad officiating. Burial was made in Estherville Lutheran Cemetery.

Mr. Walen was born Sept. 28, 1881 in Norway to Nels and Sarah Walen. He came to the United States in1901 to the Dolliver area. He was married to Annie Anderson Feb. 8, 1911, in Ceylon, Minn. In 1913 they moved to Corinth, N.D., where they farmed until 1936 when they moved to Estherville. In Estherville he was engaged in carpenter and construction business. His wife died in 1961.

He was a member of the Estherville Lutheran Church.

He is survived by three sons, Norman of Santa Monica, Calif., Ervin, of Fresno, Calif., Archie of Dubuque; three daughters, Mrs. Warren (Gladys) Williamson, Minneapolis, Minn., Mrs. Irvin (Thelma) Munson, Estherville, Mrs. Clayton (Bernice) Thorson, Winnebago, Minn.; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; two brothers and three sisters in Norway.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, three brothers and two sisters.

Music at the funeral services was performed by a son-in-law, Warren Williamson, as soloist, accompanied by Mrs. Arthur Voetmann. Pallbearers were grandsons, Robert and Dennis Thorson, Alan Munson, Dennis Montgomery, John Hobbs and Tom Grant. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, April 24, 1972)
