Estherville – Funeral services for Esther C. Valen, 95, of Estherville will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 4, 1999 at the Estherville Lutheran Church in Estherville with Pastor Arlyn Norris and Pastor Jane Johnston officiating. Interment will be at the Estherville Lutheran Cemetery. She died on Saturday, May 1, 1999 at the Good Samaritan Center, Estherville.

Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. today at Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home, Estherville.

She was born on October 11, 1903 in Forest City, the daughter of Halvor and Johanna (Jenson) Hanson. She received her education in the Paulson and Delano schools in rural Winnebago County. She graduated from the Waldorf Academy in Forest City and from the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. While attending Waldorf she sang in the Waldorf Choir.

On November 24, 1932 she was united in marriage to Arthur Valen at Winnebago Lutheran Church in rural Lake Mills. She taught rural schools for ten years and attended summer school at the University of Northern Iowa. She gave piano, organ and voice lessons.

She was a member of the Palestine Lutheran Church in rural Dolliver and later at the Estherville Lutheran Church. She was president of the Women’s Society, taught Sunday school, sang in the church choir and quartets, served on the wedding committee at Estherville Lutheran and was active in the ELCW. She sang in the county chorus and worked with several 4-H activities with all her children,.

She enjoyed traveling with Pastor Stan Eyberg’s travel group, crocheting afghans and sewing.

She is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth Isder and her husband John of Okoboji, Dorothy Raney and her husband Cdr. Charles of Iowa City, Mary Petersen and her husband Ron of Harris, Barbara Mull and her husband Charles of St. Augustine Beach, Fla., Katherine Roberts and her husband Glen of Cheyenne, Wyo. and LaDonna Bergeson and her husband Harland of Worthington; son, Donald Valen and his wife Leila of Estherville; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren,

She was preceded in death by her husband; grandson, Charles Raney; parents; five sisters and two brothers. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, May 3, 1999)
