Estherville – Funeral services for Birger R. Handeland, 87, of Estherville will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 10 at Estherville Lutheran Church with the Revs. Arlyn Norris and Jane Johnson officiating. Interment will be at the Estherville Lutheran Cemetery. He died on Jan. 7, 1998 at his home.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville.

He was born Oct. 23, 1910 at home in Estherville, the son of Lars and Ellen (Endresen) Handeland. He lived all his life in Estherville, receiving his education in the Estherville schools and graduated from Estherville High School in 1928.

On June 18, 1936, he was united in marriage to Ethel Christensen at Estherville Lutheran Church. He was employed by Holy Family Health Center in the maintenance department for 40 years and drove school bus for the Estherville Community Schools for 27 years.

He was a member of Estherville Lutheran Church, served on the Board of Trustees and taught Sunday School.

He is survived by his wife, Ethel, of Estherville; a son James Handeland of Lincoln, Neb.; a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Mary Jo) Arndt of Cushing, WI; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Loyd Handeland of Forest City; two sisters Jennie Hedrick of Estherville and Mrs. Arnt (Josephine) Espeset of Sioux Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, four brothers and three sisters. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, January 9, 1998)
