Mrs. Lars Handeland Dies at 86
Mrs. Lars (Ellen Josephine) Handeland, 86, longtime Estherville resident, died at 1:30 yesterday morning at her home in Estherville of a heart attack. She had been in failing health for many years.

Family services will be held at 1:30 p.m. with public services following at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Estherville Lutheran Church, the Rev. L.A. Mathre officiating. Interment will be in the Estherville Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call at the Sternborg-Reese Funeral Home from today until 10 a.m. Tuesday, at which time the body will be taken to lie in state at the church until the time of services.

Mrs. Handeland was born April 22, 1875 in Haugesund, Norway, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rasmus Endresen. She received her education in Haugesund schools. She was married to Lars Handeland in Haugesund on April 27, 1895. She moved with her husband and five children from Norway to Estherville in 1904.

Mrs. Handeland was a member of the Estherville Lutheran Church.

She is survived by five sons, Reinholt, Andrew and Birger, all of Estherville, Loyd of Gruver, and Alfred of Mankato, Minn., four daughters, Manghild, Mrs. Cliff (Jennie) Hedrick and Mrs. Arnt (Josephine) Espeset, all of Estherville, and Mrs. T.E. (Clara) Beian of Burlington, 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son, a daughter, a sister and a brother. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, May 8, 1961)
