Estherville – Funeral services for Helen Christensen, 93, of Estherville will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 19 at the Estherville Lutheran Church in Estherville with Pastor Ray Miller and Pastor Gordon Syverson officiating. Interment will be held at Estherville Lutheran Cemetery in Estherville. She died on Monday June 16, 2003 at the Good Samaritan Center in Estherville.

Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. today at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville.

Helen was born on June 27, 1909 in Dolliver, the daughter of Ben and Mary (Erickson) Hatland. Helen was a lifelong resident of Emmet County. She was baptized and confirmed at Palestine Lutheran Church in rural Dolliver. She grew up on a farm near Dolliver and received her education in Dolliver schools.

On June 24, 1931, she was united in marriage to Einer Christensen in Estherville. They made their home on the Murray farm and later the Greig farm. In 1939, the family moved to a farm north of Estherville. After her son Charles death in 1964, Helen worked for sometime in the dining room of the Good Samaritan Center. Einer died Dec. 6, 1993.

She has been a resident of Good Samaritan since November of 1998. Prior to that she lived with her daughter and son-in-law for three years.

Helen dearly loved and enjoyed spending time with her family. A special joy in her life was to always be there to care for her grandchildren. Her hobbies including cooking, baking, knitting, crocheting and shopping.

Helen was an active member of Estherville Lutheran Church. Some of her various activities in the church included Advisor/Leader of Willing Workers (a young girl’s group), the Mary Circle and E.L.C.W. Helen was also a lifelong member of the Triple E Women’s Club, Neighborhood Birthday Club and she also served as Emmet Township 4 H Leader.

Helen is survived by one daughter, Marian Brunsvold and her husband, Wally of Spirit Lake; one son, Richard Christensen and his wife, Joyce of Fort Atkinson, Wis.; eight grandchildren, Scott Brunsvold and his wife, Becky, Wayne Brunsvold and his wife, Barb; Chrisann Etrheim and her husband, Dan; Carla Jones and her husband, Jeff; Eric Christensen and his wife, Brenda; Leslie Christensen; Kara Christensen; Maren Christensen; twelve great-grandchildren, Brittney, Jonathan, Briana and Jared Brunsvold; Caila, Casey and Justin Jones; Charissa, Trey and Brooke Etrheim, Brandon Brunsvold; Aaron Christensen; two sisters-in-law, Ethel Handeland of Estherville; Mary Christensen of Estherville; and several nieces and nephews.

She has been preceded in death by her husband, Einer; one son, Charles, who died in 1964; her parents; brothers, Howard and Raymond Hatland; sisters, Laura Ankrum; Caila Myklebust; Lillian and Marian Hatland; and half-sisters, Edna Romsa and Gladys Partello.
