George Bloss, Sr., died very suddenly about eight o’clock Monday [November 14, 1898] morning of heart failure at the residence of his son, George Bloss, Jr., at the south end of Ryan Lake, Center township. He was born in Germany and was 64 years of age. He had been a resident of Iowa for thirty-one years. He was the father of eleven children, nine of whom are living. He was a member of Co. I 55 Illinois Vol. Inft. And served four years in the army. For the past two years he had made his home with his son in this county because he was more free from asthma than at his home in Sac county. The comrades of M.A. Vandenburg Post conducted the G.A.R. ritual service at the residence and with many other friends escorted the remains to the depot, which were taken by his son and daughter accompanied by Mr. Inman to Odebolt, Iowa, for burial. He was a member of the Lutheran church and funeral services will be held at his home church. A Friend (Estherville Democrat, Estherville, IA, November 16, 1898)

A Sudden Summons
Geo. Bloss, Sr., who for the past two years has been making his home with his son George, who lives at the south end of Ryan Lake, died very suddenly Monday morning about 8 o’clock. He had been feeling as well, apparently as usual in the morning. He had hitched up a horse for his daughter, who is teaching, to drive to school and was preparing to hitch another team to drive to town when he began to feel sick and went to the house. His daughter-in-law assisted him to bed and, having found that he was very sick, she hurried to the field to notify her husband. When they returned the father was already dead. Mr. Bloss was born in Germany and was something over sixty four years of age at the time of his death. He came to this country in his early years. At the breaking out of the civil war he responded to President Lincoln’s call for volunteers and enlisted in Co. I of the 55th Illinois infantry. He served through the entire war. He came to Iowa about thirty-one years ago and to Emmet county two years ago. He was the father of eleven children, nine of whom are living. All are residents of Sac county, Iowa, with the exception of George Jr. and a daughter who is teaching in the county. The remains were sent from here Tuesday night to Odebolt, Sac county, where they will be interred. (Weekly Northern Vindicator, Estherville, IA, November 17, 1898)

Per 1880 census, born 1835 in Germany
