Herman Lund, One of Emmet County’s Boys Meets a Horrible Death Near Coal Harbor, North Dakota
Herman Lund, son of H. Helgeson which used to reside near Swan Lake, on farm lately owned by Alf. Nickelson. He moved with his father to Campbell county, S.D., where he has a comfortable home. Herman and his two brothers, Helge and Andrew, however, removed to Coal Harbor, McLean county and started a ranch. On Saturday, Jan. 29, Herman, who was driving an overland freight from Velva to Coal Harbor for a merchant, was on his way back with a load and to keep warm walked beside when in some manner he slipped and fell under the wheels, they crossing over his leg, arm and hand so as to leave him entirely helpless. His teams continued for a little ways when they became tangled up in the lines and had to stop. For two days and three nights he lay there until his brothers found him, he being three miles from home. The nearest doctor was at Bismark, 75 miles distant. Word was got to him, however, and he came the same day. But the doctor found that nothing could be done for him at home so had him brought, overland broken and frozen, to the hospital at Bismark, where after several amputations, he finally died Feb. 14.

His remains were brought home and laid beside his sister’s who died three years ago. The deceased of all the 62 hours he laid there he was never unconscious. He was 23 years old. Yours truly, Joe Peterson, Brisco, S.D., Feb. 19, 1898. (Emmet County Republican, Estherville, IA, March 3, 1898)
