Estherville – Harold C. [Clinton] “Shorty” Wittern, 82, Estherville, died Saturday, April 4, 1987 at Holy Family Hospital in Estherville.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Chapel in Estherville, with the Rev. John Besore III of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

He was born March 22, 1905 in Bridgeman, Minn. to Charles and Laura Ida (Unger) Wittern. He received his education at the Estherville schools. He married Kathryn Mahan on Sept. 8, 1941 in Maryville, Missouri. He lived most of his life in Estherville. He was a conductor on the Rock Island Railroad from 1929 until his retirement in 1967. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen.

He is survived by a sister-in-law, Mrs. Cecil Wittern, Honolulu, Hawaii; a nephew, Jack Wittern, South St. Paul, Minn.; a niece, Shirley (Mrs. Tom) Batey, Honolulu, Hawaii; a grand niece and four grand nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, who died May 15, 1980; an infant son and a brother. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, April 6, 1987)
