Mrs. Barnes Passes Away
Death Results of Long Illness
Mrs. L.H. Barnes, 75, a prominent resident of Estherville for more than half a century, died yesterday afternoon at her home, 603 East Pleasant street, following a lingering illness. Mrs. Barnes, prominent in the activities of the Methodist church before her long illness, came here with her husband I 1883, and since made this city her home.

Funeral services will be held at 2;45 p.m. tomorrow at the residence and at 3 p.m. in the Methodist church, with the Rev. F.W. Ortmeyer officiating. Interment will be made in Oak Hill cemetery.

Born in Canada
Mrs. Barnes was born Nov. 6, 1861 in Mallorytown, Ontario, Canada, and came to Iowa with her parents when she was three years old. The family settled in Tama county where Mrs. Barnes remained until her marriage, Feb. 12, 1880.

During the next three years the couple resided in Dysart and also in Dows, coming to Estherville in 1883 where Mr. Barnes obtained employment with the B.C.R. & N. line, now the Rock Island.

Mrs. Barnes became a member of the Estherville Methodist church Dec. 11, 1892 and has been a consistent worker in church affairs until her illness forced her to relinquish this work. She was a member of the Priscilla class in the Sunday School, a member of the Ladies Aid Society and also of the Women’s Foreign Missionary Society and took an active part in the affairs of all three organizations.

Mrs. Barnes’ parents died when she was a child and three brothers and four sister also preceded her in death, she being the remaining member of the family.

She is survived by her husband, one son, W.A. Barnes of Minneaplis; a daughter, Mrs. L.C. Wanamaker, Estherville; and a grandson, William Barnes, Jr., of Minneapolis. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, April 16, 1936)

Mrs. L.H. Barnes, 74, resident of Estherville for 53 year, died yesterday afternoon at 3 o’clock at her home following an illness of several months. A year ago Mrs. Barnes was taken to a local hospital for treatment, where she remained for a month. Her health began failing about two months ago and she became bedfast two weeks before her death.

Funeral services will be held at the home at 2:45 and at the Methodist church at 3 o’clock with the Rv. F.W. Ortmeyer in charge. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.

When in good health Mrs. Barnes was always an active member of the Priscilla class and Ladies Aid of the local Methodist church, which she joined in 1893.

Margaret [Margreth] Jane Whitmore was born in Mallorytown, Ontario, Canada, on Nov. 6, 1861, but came to Tama county, Iowa, with her parents when she was three years old. Her parents died when she was a small child. On Feb. 12, 1880, she was united in marriage to L.H. Barnes.

Mr. and Mrs. Barnes lived in Dysart and Dows until 1883, when they came to Estherville and have lived here ever since.

She is survived by her husband, one son, W.A. Barnes of Minnapolis, one daughter, Mrs. L.C. Wanamaker, and one grandson in Minneapolis. She is preceded in death by her four sisters and three brothers.

Mrs. Madge Baldwin of Chicago, a niece, and John Hills of Montevideo, Minn., a nephew, will arrive here tomorrow morning to attend their aunt’s funeral. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, April 16, 1936)

Mrs. L. H. Barnes Was Buried Friday From M.E. Church

The death of Mrs. L. H. Barnes of this city was a severe shock to her many friends in this city. Regardless of the fact it was well known she had been seriously ill for sometime, the death seemed unexpected at this time.

Mrs. Barnes came to Estherville with her husband in 1883 and at that time Mr. Barnes entered the employ of the old B.C.R.&N. railroad, running out of this city. He remained in the service since that time and has retained his residence in this city.

Mrs. Barnes has been a very active church worker in the Methodist Church of this city. She was a dedicated Christian and was active in the church societies and the Sunday School. She was of a quiet disposition and a wonderful neighbor and friend, generous and kind to all.

Mrs. Barnes was born in Mallorytown, Canada, Nov. 6th, 1891 [s/b 1861]. She came to the States at the age of 3. The family became residents of Tama until her marriage in February, 1880. There were born to Mr. and Mrs. Barnes, a son, W. A., now of Minneapolis, Minn., and Mrs. L. C. Wanamaker of this city.

The funeral services were held at the home at one-thirty and at the Methodist Church at two o’clock Friday, the Rev. F. W. Ortmeyer officiating. Interment was made in Oak Hill cemetery.
