A.W. Sumpter Dies After Long Illness
Funeral Services to Be Held Monday
A.W. Sumpter, 71, died this morning at 2:30 at his home after an extended illness caused by ulcers. He was hospitalized for eight weeks in St. Mary’s hospital, Rochester, Minn., and on Aug. 21 of this year underwent surgery at Holy Family hospital.

For the past 20 years Sumpter had been employed as engine inspector on the Rock Island.

Survivors include his wife, Dr. Alice Stinson, one son, Elmer, and two grandchildren, Sandra and Jon. His parents, a sister and three brothers preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held Monday at the Mahlum and Sandin chapel at 2:30 p.m., Rev. G.L. Conley officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery. Friends may call at the Mahlum and Sandin chapel Sunday afternoon and evening.

It has been requested that no flowers be offered. Instead it is desired that tributes be given in memorials for some worthy cause. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, October 12, 1946)
