George Rugtiv, 87, Dies; Rites on Wednesday
George O. Rugtiv, 87, died Saturday [May 11, 1946] evening at Holy Family hospital after a heart ailment of many months.He was born Jan. 27, 1859 in Aetne, Norway. He was baptized and confirmed in Norway and received his early training there.
In 1881 he came to America and located in Story City. Later he returned to Norway to get his wife. They returned to this country together in 1895 and lived in Story county for a year.
They then moved to Emmet county where they made their permanent home. Their home was on the farm on which the Rugtiv school now stands. Mr. and Mrs. Rugtiv moved to Estherville in 1900. In 1935 the couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary and in 1936 Mrs. Rugtiv died.
Survivors of Mr. Rugtiv include one son, Oscar E., of Long Beach, Calif.; two daughters, Winnie Lough of Bell, Calif., and Mrs. Julia Marie Whorley of Estherville; eight grand children and three great grandchildren; one brother, Osmond of Norway; and two sisters, Mrs. Ed Johnson, Des Moines and Mrs. Christina Anderson of Froid, Montana. A son, Samuel Benjamin, preceded him in death in 1923.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock in the Sternborg funeral chapel and at 2:30 in the Estherville Lutheran church.
Rev. C.M. Hanson will officiate and burial will be in the Oak Hill cemetery. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, May 13, 1946)
