Services for Dr. Morton Wednesday
Dr. Matthew Taylor Morton, who lived most of his life in Estherville, died at 1:20 p.m. Saturday of a cerebral hemorrhage at Holy Family hospital. He was 63.

Dr. Morton was hospitalized during May and June last year following a severe heart attack. However, he resumed his medical practice in September.

Born May 25, 1890, in Princeton, Ill., he moved with his parents to Estherville. He graduated from Estherville high school in 1910 and received his M.D. degree from the University of Iowa in 1917. He spent his internship at University hospitals in Iowa City.

He served with the armed forces during World War I in 1918 and 1919 and set up his practice at Monroe for a short time before returning to Estherville. In 1926 and 1927 he returned to Iowa City to study internal medicine.

His wife, the former Annie Turner of Estherville, died in 1919. On Feb. 12, 1920, he married Mrs. Nellie Townsend of Monroe.

Active in medical circles and community affairs, Dr. Morton was district counselor of the Iowa State Medical society, a past president of the Emmet County Medical society and a member of Kiwanis club, the American Legion and the Masonic lodge.

Surviving his death are a son, Harold Morton of San Marcos, Cal.; two stepsons, Kenneth Townsend of Long Beach, Calif., and Merritt Townsend of Escondido, Calif.; and a stepdaughter, Mrs. Fred Albertson of South Gate, Calif.; 17 grandchildren and four great grandchildren; a brother, Owen Morton of Estherville; and a sister, Mrs. Frank Glotfelty of Western Springs, Ill.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Methodist church, the Rev. H. Hughes Dill officiating. Burial will be in Oakhill cemetery with Masonic graveside services.

Dr. Morton’s body will be taken to the home at 4 p.m. tomorrow and to the church at 11 a.m. Wednesday where he will lie in state until time of services. The casket will not be opened during and after the service.

Members of organizations who would like to attend the funeral services in a body are requested to notify the Sternborg Funeral Home for reservations in the church. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, February 1, 1954)

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Methodist church in Estherville for Dr. Matthew T. Morton, 63, who died Saturday [January 30, 1954] of a cerebral hemorrhage at Holy Family hospital.

Dr. Morton was active in medical circles and community affairs in Estherville and Emmet county for many years. He was a longtime resident and physician in Estherville. (Graettinger Times, Graettinger, IA, February 4, 1954)

Dr. M. T. Morton Dies – The owner-operator of the Park View clinic in Estherville, Dr. M. T. Morton, 63, died Saturday night following a stroke. Dr. Morton closed the clinic about 2 ½ years ago after operating it for 12 years. (Cedar Rapids Gazette, Cedar Rapids, IA, February 1, 1954)
