Mrs. Johnston, Resident of City 54 Years, Dies
Mrs. Sam Johnston, long time Estherville resident, died early Sunday [July 31, 1949] morning of a heart attack. Death occurred in her sleep at her home after she had been ill only a very short time.

Mrs. Johnston was active in church and club and community work during her lifetime. She was active in the Methodist church, president of the Methodist ladies aid and took a prominent part in foreign and home mission work and was a missionary society spiritual life leader for many years. She was historian for 23 years for the Service Star Legion. In the past she was an active participant in the Woman’s club.

The deceased was born Jennie G. Cox, Oct. 6, 1859 in Mt. Hope, Ill. Formerly a milliner, she received her education in Mt. Hope. On Nov. 24, 1886, she was married to Sam Johnston at Boston, Mass. The couple moved from Boston to Iowa 58 years ago. They lived for short times in Manchester, Belmond and Douds [Dows] before moving to Estherville in Nov. 1895. The Johnstons observed their 62nd wedding anniversary in Nov. of 1948.

Survivors include her husband, two sons, Raymond Johnston and Clyde R. Johnston, both of Cedar Rapids; two daughters, Mrs. Blanche Thompson who made her home with the Johnstons, and Mrs. Romaine Sondrol, both of Estherville, 10 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, two brothers, Ed Cox, newspaper editor, of Pierce, Neb., and Harvey Cox of Los Angeles, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, Dr. Harry Johnston, in 1929.

Services will be held 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Johnston home and 2:30 p.m. at the Methodist church, Rev. John DeLong officiating. Burial will be at Oak Hill cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Emlet Twito, Walter Schultz, William Sidles, Arnold Mouritsen, Dan Howard and Henry Knutsen.

Mr. and Mrs. Ira Swartz, president of Service Star Legion, announced that the organization members have been requested to meet 2:15 p.m. at the Methodist church so that they may attend the funeral. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, August 1, 1949)

Out-of-town relatives who attended the Mrs. Samuel Johnston funeral Tuesday are: the families of the two sons; Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Johnston and daughter June and Raymond S. Johnston and daughter Joan, both of Cedar Rapids; the family of a brother, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Cox and their son, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Cox both of Pierce, Neb. Ed Cox is the editor of the Pierce newspaper. Families of three nieces, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kay of Anamosa, Mrs. Clyde Johnson and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Jones, both of Manchester. Others were Mrs. George Moore, daughter Alice and son and family, Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Moore of Dows, Mrs. Bud Cavanaugh and Sherry and Karon of Gilmore City; Mr. and Mrs. Porter Henaman and daughter Myrna of Ames, Donna Sondrol of Minneapolis and Henry Thompson of Sioux City. Services for Mrs. Johnston were held 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Johnston home and 2:30 p.m. at Estherville Methodist church, Rev. John DeLong officiating. Burial was at Oak Hill cemetery.
