Mrs. William Johnston Dies in Texas
Mrs. William S. Johnston, 79, for 50 years a resident of Estherville, died this morning in Dallas, Texas, where she had been visiting with her daughter, Elaine, Mrs. Dale Burket, and family.Mrs. Johnston was the widow of Attorney William S. Johnston, and had continued to make her home here after his death until recently. Since leaving Estherville she has made her home with her son and daughters, James and Mrs. G.A. Garinger (Margaret Jane) at Denver, and Mrs. Burket who recently moved with her family from Kansas to Texas.
Mrs. Johnston suffered a stroke Feb. 16 and another on Sunday that proved massive.
She had been a member of the First Methodist Church in Estherville and a member of the M.E. Alpha club. In 1920 she was secretary of the Estherville’s Woman’s club and in 1939-49 was Regent of Okamanpado Chapter of the D.A.R.
She served as state chairman of the D.A.R. historic relic committee for the Iowa room of Continental Hall, Washington, D.C., and served eight years as local chapter historian.
Mrs. Johnston was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and of Beauceant. She was a trustee of the Estherville Library board for 20 years.
In addition to her two daughters and son, she is survived by six grandchildren.
The body will be cremated. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Reese-Henry Chapel in Estherville. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, February 29, 1968)
