Glen Higgins, 28, Kills Self With Shotgun
Lived on Farm Near Emmetsburg
Glen Higgins, 28, formerly of Estherville, took his own life at 11:30 last night when he shot himself through the heart with a 20-guage shotgun, Palo Alto county Sheriff T.J. McCaffrey and the county coroner, Dr. R.J. Brink of Ayrshire said this morning.Higgins lived on a farm eight miles southwest of Emmetsburg with his mother, Mrs. Stella Higgins.
Dr. Brink said the deceased man had been “having mental difficulties” for the last few days and attributed his actions to this cause. The corner said it would not be necessary to hold an inquest into the death.
According the Sheriff McCaffrey, Higgins had gone to bed last night but got up, went outside the door and shot himself.
He said that a brother, Warren of Estherville, who was staying at his mother’s home last night because of Glen’s condition, heard a noise when sounded like a “door slamming,” got up to investigate and discovered the body of his brother.
He is survived by his mother, one brother, Warren of Estherville; and five sisters, Mrs. Gus Ramsey of Gruver, Mrs. Marlin Dean of Spirit Lake, Mrs. W.W. Osberg of Estherville and Barbara Higgins of Ames.
The body was brought to the Mahlum and Sandin funeral home early this morning. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, December 14, 1946)
