Benton F. Cooley 1835-1897

Benton Cooley was born in Attica Center, NY. On September 28, 1863 he married Lydia Lovell in Estherville, IA. They had 10 children, one of whom died in infancy. Benton & his family never settled in one place for very long. They lived in various counties of southern Minnesota, Iowa, and the Dakota Territory. Benton's family made it as far west as Rapid City, SD, before Benton's deteriorating health and mental state caused them to return to Minnesota. Benton passed away in Estherville, IA on Dec 22, 1897. He is interred in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Estherville, in a plot deeded to his son, Fay Cooley.

He was survived by the following children: Eugene Franklin Cooley, Fay Cooley, Mary Emelia Cooley Floyd Edwards, Nellie Colley Esler Perry, Thaddeus Leon Cooley, Bertram Deforest Cooley, Arthur Floyd Cooley. He was preceded in death by Fred Cooley and Artie Lee Cooley.(Family History records – Karen Cooley)

Jas. [B.F.] Cooley an old man living west of town near the cemetery, was pronounced insane by the insane commission last week. The old man has been in very feeble health for some time and is now in now condition to be removed to the hospital. (Weekly Northern Vindicator, Estherville, IA, December 23, 1897)
