ESTHERVILLE - Mass of Christian Burial for Lanny Rutherford, 75, of Estherville will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Estherville with Monsignor Michael Sernett as Celebrant. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Estherville with Vigil Service at 7 p.m. Interment will be at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery with military graveside rites by VFW Post 3388 and American Legion Post 91 of Estherville.

He died Thursday, April 18, 2013, at his home in Estherville.

Lanny Lee Rutherford, the son of Raymond and Rose (Kruger) Rutherford, was born July 9, 1937, in Manilla. He received his education in the Manilla Schools, graduating in 1955. He served in the United States Navy from 1955-1958.

On Nov. 25, 1963, he was united in marriage to Maureen House in Fairfax. Lanny worked for Booth & Olsen Construction in Sioux City and Giese Construction in Eagle Grove. He owned and operated Kandy Kitchen in Manilla; Lanny's Lounge and Steakhouse in Mapleton; Lanny's II in Danbury; M & R Hardware in Manilla; but his favorite job was operating Riverview Golf Course, retiring in 2005. In his retirement, he did grounds maintenance for Iowa Lakes Community College. For hobbies, Lanny enjoyed dancing, storytelling and jokes; long car rides and especially his children and grandchildren.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus.

Left to cherish Lanny's memory is his wife, Maureen, of Estherville; children, Jeff Messenbrink of Omaha, Neb., Shari Rutherford and friend, Dan, of Corpus Christi, Texas, Brad (Kristi) Rutherford of Estherville, Kellie Olson and friend, Marty, of Estherville and Dawn (Rodney) Hockett of Estherville; grandchildren, Jeremy (Sasha), Brett (Molly), Aaron (Annie), Tiffany, Levi (Victoria), Natalie, Mariah, Nicole and Robert Jon; great-grandchildren, Preston Lance, Riley and also more on the way; brothers, Ray (Kay) Rutherford, Wayne (Donna) Rutherford and Tom (Carolyn) Rutherford; sisters, Diane Sonderman and Gloria (Ron) Lohrmann and also by many nieces, nephews and friends.

Preceding Lanny in death are his parents; sister and brother-in-law, Marlys and Casey Karsten; brother-in-law, Bob Sonderman and son-in-law, Mike Olson. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, April 19, 2013)
