Charles H. Brown Dies at University of Iowa Hospital
Charles H. Brown, 76, of Graettinger, died Tuesday, at 7 p.m. in the University of Iowa hospital at Iowa City. Death was caused by complications following two operations.

C.H. Brown was born July 8, 1869, at Lyons, Iowa, and received his education there. He was married to Christine Haller at Preston, Iowa, Feb. 20, 1900. They lived at Sherlock and in 1904 moved near Estherville to farm.

Mr. Brown is survived by his widow and two children, Milo of Spirit Lake and Mrs. B.M. Stoddard of St. Paul, and one sister, Mrs. Charles Graefe of Clinton.

Services will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the house and 2 o’clock at the Methodist church in Graettinger, with Rev. Miller in charge. Burial will be at Estherville. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, October 4, 1945)

A short mention was made in last week’s Times of the death of C.H. Brown, 76, of Graettinger, who passed away at seven p.m., Tuesday, October 2, 1945. Mr. Brown had been a patient at the hospital for a short time. On September 22 he underwent a surgical operation and the following day had to undergo an emergency for appendicitis. The shock to the system was more than he could stand at his age. He made a valiant fight for life but his condition gradually weakened and he passed away.

The remains were returned to the Brown home in Graettinger and the funeral was held Friday afternoon. Short services were conducted at the home at 1:30 and at the Methodist church at 2:00. The pastor, the Rev. J. Heber Miller, officiated. Many neighbors and friends of the deceased were in attendance. Numerous floral bouquets adorned the casket and a number of offerings to the church were given in memory of the deceased. Interment was in the cemetery at Estherville. The pallbearers were Carl Thoreson, Eugene Berg, Gilbert Osher, Charles Jackson, Jake Jensen and Kenneth Starkey.

C.H. Brown was born July 8, 1969, at Lyons, Iowa, and received his education there. He was married to Christina Heller at Preston February 20, 1900. The couple resided in Clinton county for some years following their marriage. Later they moved to Emmet county and resided on the Caspire farm until five years ago when they retired from the farm and located in Graettinger.

Mr. Brown is survived by his wife and by two children, Milo, of Spirit Lake, and Mrs. B.M. Stoddard of St. Paul. One sister, Mrs. Charles Graefe, resides at Clinton. She was here for the funeral.

Mr. Brown was one of Graettinger’s well known citizens and was respected and esteemed by friends and neighbors. Despite his advanced years he was able to be about and hence was well acquainted in the community. He was an upright, honorable Christian gentleman and will be missed very much by his devoted wife and children. The people of the community join the Times in extending sincere sympathy to Mrs. Brown and to the other members of the family in their sorrow.
